About 2018 Stage for the Up-and-Coming Talent Series

The project provides stage performance opportunities for promising artists of traditional operas at home. At this joint performance series, up-and-coming talents of Beijing opera, Taiwanese opera, Hakka opera, Luantan opera, and Bangzi opera are invited to go on stage and share finely hone performing skills with their peers and the audience. It is hoped that budding performers will be motivated to unleash more of their potential on stage and grow into stars of tomorrow.

 

The Performing Group│Hsing Legend Youth Theatre

Hsing Legend Theatre was established in 2016 and has performed in the Legend Opera, at the Legend Youth Xiqu Festival, during Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center’s opening season, and at the National Center for Traditional Arts. It holds regular workshops and showcases at the Fanqiao Theater and at schools and colleges, and its members participate in CLT's annual major productions, such as Midsummer Night's Dream (2016) and Faust (2017).

The show times are as follows:

  • 2018/11/08 thu. 19:30 Third session: Butterfly the Debaucher (Peking Opera) (about 30 minutes)
  • 2018/11/18 sun. 14:30 Second session: Zhaojun Leaving the Past Behind (Peking Opera) (about 30 minutes)

 

Butterfly the Debaucher

Synopsis

JIANG YONGZHI, a thief with excellent martial arts skills, was nicknamed "Butterfly the debaucher" for his lechery.

One day, to celebrate JIANG 's sworn brother, DENG CHEQIN’s birthday, he stole a valuable jade horse as a gift for DENG. On the way home, JIANG ran out of money, so he broke into the ZHAO estate at night, and trying to steal from the ZHA family. Jiang accidentally ran into the beautiful young maiden of the estate and decided to violate her. A housemaid exposed him, JIANG fled and left a red flower as a mark. ZHA reported to the government official BAO and the squad was sent to go after JIANG. JIANG fled to Yuan-Yang Bridge, and dived to the water to escape but was caught by JIANG PING, one of the squad members who is an expert in water. JIANG was brought to court and punished for his crime.

Performers/CHU Po-chengJIANG YONG ZHI

Born in 1995. Major in WuSheng (marshal character for roles involving combat). Lead Actor in Hsing Legend Theatre. Currently graduated from the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts. Taught by: GUO Hong-tian, ZHANG Fu-chun, DAI Li-wu, WANG Li-jun and WU Hsing- kuo.

Learned Repertory: Fleeing by Night, Wu Song Slaying the Tiger, Qin Huaiyu Battle at Yuehu City Gates, Qin Qiong Inspecting the Army Formation, One Arrow Revenge, Death of Zhou Yu, Xue Ping Gui Bid Farewell to Wife Wang Boa Chuan.

Chu performed in CLT's 108 Heroes -Tales from Water Margin III, as Lysander in Mid-summer Night's Dream and as Mephisto in《Faust》.

 

 

Zhaojun Leaving the Past Behind

Synopsis

This is a story about WANG ZHAO JUN married to the Xiong Nu tribe outside of boarder by the Emperor Yuan of Han dynasty, in the hope that she would bring peace between Xiong Nu and her mother country. Escorted by officials sent by the emperor, WANG ZHAO JUN embarked on a long journey to the north on horseback. They braved bitter cold and heavy snow storms and finally reached Xiong Nu.

This piece portrays desolation of the frontier and ZHAO JUN’s grief for parting her home country. ANG ZHAO JU will be in exquisite costume and accompanied by WANG LONG and MA FU, who are in clowns and comic roles.

Performers/HUANG JolinWANG ZHAO JUN

Born in 1992. Majored in QingYi (virtuous and elite women role).

Graduated from National Taiwan College of Performing Arts. Taught by BAI Ming-yin, WANG Feng-win, CHEN-Yun, PAN Je-hua, and CHOW Sheu-wen.

Learned Repertory: Xue Ping Gui, Wang Boa Chuan and the Princess, Hong Sheng Stealing Box, Tales from the Flowers in the Mirror, Peony Pavilion, Farewell My Concubine, Tale of the White Snake, Story of the West Chamber.

Jolin performed as Helena with CLT in Midsummer Night's Dream in 2016 and as Gretchen in Faust 2017. Lead actress in Hsing Legend Theatre.
