About the Performance
At the end of the Western Han dynasty, Wu Ying, a loyal general was murdered by Wang Mang, who seized the imperial Liu family and founded a new dynasty. On his deathbed, Wu asked his family to revenge him and restore the country. To befriend Wu Han, the son of Wu Ying and also a general, Wang lied about Wu Ying’s death—claiming that he was murdered by the previous emperor—married Wu Han his daughter Lanying, and made him the gatekeeping general of the Tong Pass. One day, Wu Hang captured Liu Xiu, one of the descendants of the Han imperial family. Wu told his mother the news, who replied with the harsh truths of how Wu’s father was really murdered. The mother demanded her son to let go of Liu Xiu and his four followers—which Wu accepted—and to also kill his wife Lanying, the daughter of his father’s murderer. Torn between family and love, Wu has a difficulty decision to make…

Established by Taiwanese opera master Liao Chiung-chih, Shintrun Taiwanese Opera Troupe is committed to promoting traditional Taiwanese opera, while also refining performances by accentuating the delicate gestures and graceful vocal operatic music. Over the years, the troupe has also strived to bring out the best in young Taiwanese opera professionals with a high level of theatrical knowledge and skills, grooming them for the stage, putting on performances, passing on skills, and promoting this traditional art form. It has received widespread attention and acclaim, and has helped keep Taiwanese opera alive for future generations.
