About the Performance
Inspired by Journey to the South, a Chinese novel during the Ming dynasty, the show tells the story of Huaguan, a filial son, who saves his mother Heavenly Mother Jizhituo. In Zhengzhou prefecture, Xiao Yongfu and his wife Fan do not bear children. One day, the two went to a Guanyin temple to ask of a kid, and then Fan miraculously gave birth to a boy and a girl. It turned about that Fan was actually Heavenly Mother Jizhituo in disguise. She pretended to be Fan to repay kindness of Xiao. The disguise was later seen through by Monk Longrui, who disguised himself as a little monk to collect alms at Xiao’s place, and kidnapped Jizhituo away to Fengdu Ghost City. The son Xiao Jixian (another name of Huaguan) then went on a journey to save his mother.
The Performing Group│Taipei Puppet Theater
Founded in 2010, the Taipei Puppet Theater is dedicated to preserving traditional glove puppet arts, improving puppetry skills, and promoting Taiwanese puppetry on the international stage.
Over the years, members of the Taipei Puppet Theater have worked to preserve the traditional art of glove puppetry while further refining this art form. By looking deeply into the traditional and tapping into their own creativity, they have transcended the limitations of traditional puppetry and made the puppet theater richer and more diverse. Based on this spirit, the troupe has developed a performing style that is more refined and exquisite, allowing them to reach a greater audience while breathing new life into the art of glove puppetry.
